Robert (Bob) William Johnson, Lt Col (Retired) USAF, passed from this world to join his Lord and Savior on Friday, October 27, 2023, at the age of 92.

Born June 15, 1931, in Racine, Wisconsin, and raised in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Bob graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1949 and attended the Oshkosh State Engineering College before enlisting in the United States Air Force in August of 1951.

Following primary and basic pilot training at Columbus AFB, Mississippi and Foster AFB, Texas, he attended Officer Training School and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in August of 1953. A jet instructor pilot, Bob trained students at Foster AFB, TX, Craig AFB, Alabama, Perrin AFB, TX, and Laredo AFB, TX, until December 1956.

After completing Advanced Flying School training at Perrin AFB, TX, he deployed as an interceptor pilot, flight training officer, and assistant operations officer at Naha AB, Okinawa, Japan (July 1957 - December 1959). Returning stateside, Bob was stationed at ADC Detroit Air Defense Sector on Custer AFB, Michigan (March 1960 - August 1962), and later at Cheyenne AFS, Wyoming (August 1962 - January 1965) while he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wyoming.

From February 1965 to April 1996, Bob was the mechanical engineer responsible for configuration control during the assembly of four Titan III C space launch vehicles and Missile Officer for one Titan III C launch at Patrick AFB, Florida.

Deployed to Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand as a flight commander and fighter pilot, he flew 132 aerial combat missions over North Vietnam between October 1966 and June 1967. He returned to the states and became a systems program staff officer for Short-Range Attack Missile and Subsonic Cruise Armed Decoy Programs at Andrews AFB, Maryland (July 1967 - July 1972), before making a final move to Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where he served as Chief of Engineering Support Branch, Chief of Engineering Division-Guided Bombs, Chief of Guns and Rockets Branch, and Assistant Chief of Guns, Rockets and Explosives Division at the Air Force Armament Lab.

In August 1981, after thirty years of service, Bob retired from the US Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

Not content with retirement, Bob pursued several technical training certifications, including building construction, mechanical environmental control systems, and electrical construction, and worked as an electrician and mechanical heating and cooling technician. These skills led him to an active role in the Buildings and Grounds Committee at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Shalimar, Florida.

Life-long Christians, Bob and his wife, Nancy, were actively involved in the church congregations at each of their Air Force duty stations. They served on committees, taught Sunday school classes, lead small group bible studies, and sang in choirs.

Family was of the greatest importance to Bob throughout his life. His outdoorsman grandfather taught him to hunt, fish, and work hard at everything he did. He learned gardening, baking, and cooking from his grandmother and mother and kept them supplied with fresh fish. He passed on these traits and skills as he raised his children in a variety of locales.

At the center of his devotion to family was his sweetheart and beloved wife, Nancy (Lewellyn) Johnson, whom he met on a blind date and married on December 27, 1956. They enjoyed sixty-six years together before her passing in October of 2022.

Bob is now in Heaven with his Lord and Savior – Jesus Christ, and reunited with his wife, Nancy; his daughter, Julie Michael; granddaughter, Chase Michael; son-in-law, Joseph Michael; and mother and father. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey and his wife, Shirley; six grandchildren – Miranda, Jake, Dawn, Nathan, Hannah, and Philip; and three great grandchildren – Hayden, Colt, and Carter.

10:00 AM

Frank William Shaw, II, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at his home in Fort Walton Beach, Florida on October 24, 2023 at the age of 64.

Frank was born in Independence, Iowa on August 5, 1959 to the late Barbara Ann Hackney and Ross Charles Shaw as the eldest son of three. During his early years, he got to explore and experience the culture of Europe while his parents were stationed in France, Spain, and England. After moving back to the United States, Frank attended and graduated from Independence High School in 1977 and went on to study Geology at Iowa State University, where he met the love of his life, Katherine Andersen Shaw, and graduated in 1981.

Upon college graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1983 where he went on to proudly serve as an Aircrew Life Support Journeyman and Communication-Computer Systems Programmer Craftsman. After almost twenty-four years, he retired honorably as a Master Sergeant in August 2007. He continued to serve the United States Air Force in a civilian capacity for almost sixteen years with ERC/Oasis.

In life, Frank had a zest and joy for living in the moment with family and friends living each day to the fullest.

Outside of family and friends, he firmly believed in Jesus Christ, as his eternal savior and grew fond of Mathew 5:4 “blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.”

If the weather was nice out, dad could be found in his garden planting something new or harvesting the next batch of peppers.

If he wasn’t outside in the garden, the next spot you could find him was in the kitchen with a record on, concocting his next recipe, dish, or “Shaw Market” special; or he was out firing up the grill or smoker. He enjoyed bringing the family together through delicious culinary adventures.

And if he wasn’t out in the garden or developing his next spice rub, he would be enjoying one of his favorite shows: Diners, Drive-In, and Dives; Full Custom Garage; Duck Dynasty; NCIS; and many more.

Outside of the house, Frank had a wanderlust for the great outdoors or exploring a new city. He loved taking in the local fare with the one true love of his life, Kathy, his wife of forty-four wonderful and marvelous years. With his love for history, he was always looking for a great museum or fort to explore, or finding a new distillery to sample the local brews and exquisite spirits.

Outside of enjoying the local fares of various cities, he was always looking for a new trail to explore. He loved looking at God’s creations in all of their glory. He had a true wanderlust spirit at heart.

He also had a love for sports. This love ranged from coaching his kids, to supporting their journey and passion for sports on the sidelines. He was always found at practices and games no matter the distance. On a Sunday in the fall you would find him rooting for his team, the Miami Dolphins, or his love’s team, the Green Packers. He was also a diehard fan of the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Celtics.

And if you ever wanted to talk politics, he was always ready to discuss the topics of the day.

Frank is survived by the love of his life, Katherine Shaw, of forty-four years; daughter, Jessica Pytlik; son, Joshua (Tiffany) Shaw; son, Nathan (Tanya) Shaw; daughter, Sam (don’t call me Samantha) Shaw; three grandchildren, Cyrus Pytlik, Elijah-Jacob Adams, and Charlotte Shaw; and his brother, Patrick (Misty) Shaw. He was predeceased by his parents, Barbara Ann and Ross Charles Shaw; and sister, Angela Beal.

Don Panzenhagen Funeral

Don Panzenhagen
Donald Panzenhagen was called home by the Lord and Savior on January 19, 2023.  He is survived by his loving wife, two grateful daughters, two adoring grandchildren, and one ball-of-energy great-grandchild.

The only child of two educators, Don grew up in a small town in Northern Wisconsin, where he excelled in school.  He played football and baseball, worked as a lifeguard and swimming coach, and played in the band, but the highlight of his high school years was meeting the daughter of a local dairy farmer, who would become his wife.

With an appreciation for life-long learning, Don earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Wisconsin and a master’s degree in education from American University.

A natural leader and organizer, Don was widely respected throughout his Air Force service.  He was highly decorated, and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Vietnam.  While he began in security police, he spent the majority of his career in intelligence.
Don was never one to take it easy, and his family kidded him for failing miserably at retirement.  Upon settling in Fort Walton Beach, Don devoted himself to the community.  He served on the Fort Walton Beach Municipal Planning Board and Historic Sites and Structures Board as well as the Northwest Florida Symphony Guild.  He was a leader at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, holding many positions, including congregation president.  His church service extended to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod Southern District, where he was the Stewardship Chair until his passing.  Don was also the Northwest Area Vice President for the Military Officers Association of America’s Florida Council of Chapters until his passing, and worked tirelessly to protect the benefits promised to the nation’s servicemembers.

Although Don spent his life serving his nation and his community, he was also the model family man.  He cherished his time with his wife, whether they were touring castles in Europe, cruising past Alaskan glaciers, or just having morning coffee together on the patio.  He was also a tremendous dad, always supporting, encouraging, and teaching.  He never missed a concert, performance, or game, and he made sure his girls could drive a stick shift and change a tire.  Don absolutely delighted in his grandkids and could not have been prouder of the adults they have become, and always looked forward to his great-grandson’s visits so they could play “upside-down Charlie.”

Don’s many joys included watching Green Bay Packer football, early morning golf, reading, visiting Civil War and World War II battlefields, any household project that involved pulleys, and getting together with his friends every Wednesday to swap war stories over a cold beer—preferably Leinenkugel’s.  The family’s favorite memories of Don usually involve his fantastic storytelling, where he would regale them with his boyhood hijinks, and inevitably end up leaning back in his chair and laughing so hard that he could barely get the end of the story out.

One constant that shone through every aspect of Don’s life was his relationship with the Lord.  He trusted God’s promise of salvation and strove to share the Gospel with those who needed it the most.  His family rejoices in the certainty that they will be reunited with Don in Heaven and that he is now with Jesus Christ…probably hanging out with his son-in-law who recently passed away and cracking Moses and Elijah up with a story about a bonfire-gone-wrong during a boyhood camping trip.

The celebration of Don’s life was on January 26, 2023 at 10:00 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Shalimar.  Arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Watkins Funeral Home.  In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that you consider making a donation to Lutheran Indian Ministries or POBLO International.

Nancy Johnson

2022
10:00 AM

Nancy Elizabeth Johnson passed from this world to join her Lord and Savior in Heaven on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at the age of 88.
Nancy was born on September 6, 1934, in Appleton, Wisconsin, she lived in Neenah, Wisconsin, until 1956. She attended the College of Arts, enjoyed interior design, and worked for four years at Kimberly Clark in Neenah. She met her sweetheart, Robert, on a blind date, and they were married on December 27, 1956. Though she would have loved to stay in Wisconsin, she lived the military life, moving often and enjoying the different bases such as Perrin AFB in Dennison, Texas; Naha in Okinawa; Battle Creek, Michigan; Laramie, Wyoming; Satellite Beach and Fort Walton Beach in Florida. During the Vietnam War, she returned home to Neenah, while Robert was deployed overseas. After his return, they made their final move to Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach, where they have resided for fifty years.

Nancy was a gifted artist who painted often. She helped create designs for liturgical banners for their church. Her love of being active and involved led her to teach women’s bible studies, Sunday school, and youth choir. Many hours were spent making lifelong friends at their church, quilting, doing aerobics, and singing in the choir. Her favorite hymns were “In the Cross of Christ” and “Lift High the Cross” that mirrored her love of the Lord’s unfailing faithfulness. She never missed a chance to bowl or teach her grandkids to swim. Each of them were taught her prized fudge recipe from memory.

Nancy is reunited with her daughter, Julie Michael; granddaughter, Chase Michael; mother, father, and brother. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert; son, Jeffrey and his wife, Shirley; grandchildren, Miranda, Jake, Dawn, Nathan, Hannah, and Philip; and great-grandchildren, Hayden, Colt, and Carter.

Her recent words of advice are “I see death as a door I must go through to be with my Lord and Savior, my family, and friends.” In Romans 8:38-39, Paul writes about this same feeling of hope and confidence. He wrote, “For I am sure neither death, nor life, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord”. Isn’t that great news? After death, Jesus promises us eternal life with Him – always – no separation ever again. I have accepted what He offered, when He died on the cross and rose from the dead, as that promise. Have you? It is my prayer that you will!

Memorial gifts may be made to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a living plant or tree that can be a living testament to God’s abiding faithfulness.

Roger Gilman

Lt Col Roger Duane Gilman (Retired), age 80, of Niceville, FL, passed away Saturday, March 19, 2022, at home surrounded by his women.

Roger was born on April 19, 1941, in Wisconsin Rapids, WI, to Donald and Charlotte (Knuth) Gilman. Roger grew up in the area around Wisconsin Rapids and Nekoosa, WI. He especially loved time spent working on his grandparents’ dairy farm, fishing, and working at the local motorcycle shop. Roger attended the University of Wisconsin after high school and then joined the Air Force on March 8, 1962.

The Air Force sent him to the University of Wyoming to complete his BS in Mechanical Engineering where he met his future wife. After graduation from college in Aug 1964 and followed by Officer Training School, he married Louise Martenson of Worland, WY, on January 20, 1965 at Lowry AFB, CO. The Air Force sent him to various locations over the years including Vietnam, England, the University of Alabama to complete his MS in Engineering Mechanics in 1971, Eglin AFB three separate times, Thailand, Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell AFB, and Kirtland AFB. Roger retired from the Air Force on March 1, 1985 while stationed at Eglin AFB for his third time and serving as the Deputy Test Director for AMRAAM with the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center (AFOTEC), Detachment 2. During his 23-year Air Force career, Roger earned the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with one oak leaf cluster, the Airman’s Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three campaign stars, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four oak leaf clusters, the Marksmanship medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After retiring from the Air Force, Roger went to work as engineering manager for RCA at Eglin AFB. When the contract changed to Vitro a few years later, he chose to transfer with RCA / GE to the AUTEC contract on Andros Island, Bahamas. Roger, Louise, and their youngest daughter enjoyed living on Andros Island for four years. In April 1992, he retired for real, and they returned to Niceville to stay.

Roger was a Master Gardener. His other hobbies included backpacking and fly fishing in the Wyoming mountains, deep-sea fishing, flying radio-controlled airplanes, and whatever sports his daughters participated in including gymnastics, softball, and soccer. If they played it, he learned everything he could about it. He loved watching Alabama football, and we all knew to avoid the house if they weren’t doing well.

Roger was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Shalimar since 1971 when he was stationed to Eglin AFB for the first time. He served on the properties board, maintaining the church grounds and sprinkler system, for many years.

Roger was the first member of his family to graduate from college, but his greatest achievements were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren whom he all loved so very much.

After retirement, Roger thrived on greeting his grandchildren at the bus stop in the afternoon, feeding them an after-school snack, and helping with their homework. He was the chef who prepared many family dinners for us all. He expected his meals eaten while hot, so we knew to be at the table and ready for dinner to be served. His frequent farewell to his grandchildren when they left was “have fun, learn lots, get smart.”

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Louise Martenson Gilman of Niceville, FL; children, Nicolle Watts (Kevin) of Niceville, Noelle Mondragon (Joey) of Crestview, and Nija Gilman-Keeler (Zac) of Durango,

The Rev. David E. Gieseking, 63, was called to glory on Sunday, November 14, 2021. He was born in Kansas City, MO, to Lt. Marlyn and Marilyn Gieseking. As an air force family with multiple relocations, the Giesekings had several church homes during Rev. Gieseking's formative years. Active involvement in these LCMS congregations, along with relationships built, were central to the Gieseking family, firmly rooting seeds of faith in Christ for their children.

Rev. Gieseking knew well the joy and sorrow that this earthly life brings. He loved his neighbor and his Lord deeply. He saw the Lord's hand of mercy in his own life and freely shared that with others.

Rev Gieseking is preceded in death by his partner in ministry and beloved wife, Elaine Kolbus Gieseking; and mother, Marilyn Baker Gieseking.

Our prayers for peace and comfort are with Rev. Gieseking's father, Marlyn; sisters, Diane and Darlene; brothers, Don and Steve; and their families. We find comfort knowing that Rev. Gieseking is carried into eternal life in the arms of his Savior, Jesus Christ.
