The Prayer of the Word
(Lutheran Service Book; prayer 148)

Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them that, by patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Luther's Small Catechism does not add to Scripture. It is, however, a brief, clear summary of Scripture (God's Word) for use as a guide that is easy to use and applicable to all the various callings we have in life.

Mark's glad news of salvation is, based on the contextual evidence, said to be written for a Gentile readership. For example Mark seldom refers to the Old Testament, and he explains Jewish things. For Mark, Jesus proves himself to be the Christ, God's Son, by his mighty teaching and deeds and then by teaching and enduring the Passion which is followed by the Resurrection. The book of Romans is a letter from Paul written about 57 A.D. to believers in Rome, hence the name “Romans”. This epistle is really the chief part of the New Testament, and is truly the purest gospel. It is said, we can never read it or ponder over it too much; for the more we deal with it, the more precious it becomes and the better it tastes….

The Book of Judges

Range
May

The book of Judges characterizes the life of Israel in the promised land from the death of Joshua to the rise of the monarchy. Throughout, the fundamental issue is the lordship of God in Israel. It is a tale of willful rebellion that results in a pattern spiraling out of control.

Hard times create faithful men. Faithful men create good times. Good times create faithless men. And, faithless men create hard times.

It is also an account of frequent apostasy, provoking divine chastening. It also tells of urgent appeals to God in times of crisis, moving the Lord to raise up leaders through whom He restores the land to peace.

The Book of Hebrews

Faith is not blind. The book of Hebrews lay's out reason and evidence for the new covenant in Christ. Nor is faith gullible, or senseless. Instead, godly faith is exemplified by trust. That trust is based on what we know of God, relying on Him for the things we do not know. God takes what we cannot see, or cannot understand, and uses it to make good on His word. Since faith relies on what we've seen of God, and trust in Him, it becomes the "assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen" (Hebrews 11:1-3).

The Book of Esther

Range

It has often been pointed out that the name of God does not occur in the book of Esther. A superficial reaction to this omission is to question the book’s inclusion in the Bible. The great Reformation expositors, Luther and Calvin, left no commentaries on Esther, and those who write the history of the Old Testament period rarely refer to this book. Why then should Christians study it today?

The saga of Esther, Mordecai, and Haman continues... Esther was, at first, not to share forbidden knowledge (her origins), is now required to share that forbidden knowledge and she does so by using food as she differentiates desire from good (Genesis 3:6). Death follows the sharing of forbidden knowledge.

God's hand is at work behind the events in the story of Esther. God saves Esther's people from certain destruction and has caused a complete turnabout in fortune for the evil Haman.

1st & 2nd Corinthians

First Corinthians contains a frank discussion with the church about issues that impacts us still today. The church struggles with the problem of sin in its midst. The Corinthian letter is a bold call for purity (secular and spiritual) within the church. And yet it is also holds words of encouragement for us.

The church in Corinth had been infiltrated by false teachers who were challenging both Paul’s personal integrity and his authority as an apostle. The 2nd letter is the most biographical and least doctrinal of Paul’s epistles. It tells us more about Paul as a person and as a minister than any of the others letters.

We preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. -1Corinthians 1:23-24

In the wrong hands, our public institutions (overtly and covertly) endeavor to undermine the Word of God.
