Promises Unit

The beginning of a lifelong Christian education and relational experience, within the congregation, that began when I came to faith in Christ Jesus.

Goals:
1. Understand and take ownership in my Christian faith.
2. To live faith as a child and servant of God.
3. Grow in the life and mission of the church.

Unit Promises (Genesis) With the help of the Holy Spirit, students can come to understand that the promises made by God are fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Given Scripture references The Lutheran Study Bible, Small Catechism, and class discussion, students will know the story of the fall; describe the consequences of original sin; name the promise give to us through Adam and Eve; and explain the cost of sin and the hope given with the expulsion from Eden.

Promise - Jesus is the fulfillment of the promised savior

Condemnation of Sin

     • Original Sin is more than guilt of Adam’s sin
     • Those born of slaves are slaves themselves through no fault of their own
     • The inclination to evil is not the act of Adam & Eve coming into contact with the apple. It is more than a mark against us from birth.
     • It is a corruption of human nature

Original Sin = Total Corruption

     • No Righteousness; Loss of righteousness
     • No Knowledge of God; Ignorance of God (Redefining of God)
     • No Love of God; Inability to love God
     • No Trust in God; Unable to trust God (Rejecting His Church)
     • No fear of God (Contempt of God)
     • My Judgement; Hating God’s judgement
     • My Way; Seeking our own way, our own path
     • My Good; Define for ourselves good and evil
     • My Lust; Lusting after any bobble or trinket
     • My sin; Makes sinning seem reasonable (The desire to sin)

Unit Promises (Noah) An examination of the promise and covenant given to Noah and the fulfillment of that promise in the work of Christ. With the help of the Holy Spirit, students can come to understand that the promises made by God are fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Given Scripture references The Lutheran Study Bible, Small Catechism, and class discussion, students will know the promise given to Noah and the fulfillment in Christ; compare the covenant given to Noah to the work of Christ and connect baptism with the flood waters using Scripture.

With the help of the Holy Spirit, students can come to understand that the promises made by God are fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Given Scripture references The Lutheran Study Bible, Small Catechism, and class discussion, students will appraise how they are connected to the covenant given to Abraham and Sarah and identify the four points of that covenant; Explain with scripture references on how the covenant is fulfilled in Christ Jesus.

Promise given through Abraham and Sarah - Name, Nation, Blessing, & Home

Fullfilment

Name - Christ’s name is great; therefore, our name as Christians is great.

Nation - Through baptism we are adopted into the family of God and are therefore included in His great nation.

Blessing - Christ Himself is the Blessing — the promised descendant of Abraham and Sarah. As we live a life of faith, we become a blessing to others.

Home - While the focus becomes land, our true home is in Christ Jesus.

Unit Promises (Moses) God promised that he would take us to be His people. With the help of the Holy Spirit, students can come to understand that the promises made by God are fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Given Scripture references The Lutheran Study Bible, Small Catechism, and class discussion, students will compare and contrast the priestly role of Moses and that of Christ; explain how Jesus fulfills the terms of the covenant given on Mt Sinai; know that the promise given to Moses was that we would be God's people.

Unit Promises (David) Your offspring …establish his kingdom …establish his throne …forever. With the help of the Holy Spirit, students can come to understand that the promises made by God are fulfilled in Christ Jesus. Given Scripture references The Lutheran Study Bible, Small Catechism, and class discussion, students will relate the promises given to David and Abraham to their fulfillment in Christ; Compare and contrast Saul & David’s walk of faith; know and identify Samuel, Saul, and David.

Promise to David - Your offspring… an everlasting kingdom… established His throne… forever

Fulfillment

     • Jesus is a decedent of David
     • Christ Jesus is the King of Kings
     • Christ Jesus is sits on the eternal throne and kingdom

Anointed - Set apart for special work.

- Saul rejected as King for not listening to God; not trusting in God
- David of humble origins a heart after God's own heart: A desire to listen & trust in God

Jesus Fulfills the Promises of God

     • Jesus is the promised Savior.
     • Jesus saves us from sin and death.
     • Jesus perfectly fulfills all of God’s promises — name, nation, blessing, and home.
     • Through Jesus, we became God’s people.
     • Jesus is a descendant of King David, and in Him the everlasting kingdom is established.
