Welcome
We’re glad you’re considering a visit to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Whether you have been part of a church all your life, are new to the Lutheran Church, or haven’t been to church in a long time, you are welcome to worship with us.
You don’t need to know the service beforehand or worry about having everything figured out. Our worship is centered on Jesus Christ and His Word, and this page will help you know what to expect when you visit.
Sundays at a Glance
8:00 AM — Traditional Worship
9:30 AM — Sunday School and Bible Study
10:45 AM — Contemporary Worship
Good Shepherd is located at 1 Meigs Drive in Shalimar, Florida
Both worship services are centered on Christ through God’s Word, prayer, preaching, and praise. The musical style and some elements of the service differ between the two services.
What Should I Expect in Worship?
When you arrive, you’ll receive a bulletin to help you follow the service. The service is also displayed on screens in the sanctuary. Hymnals are available if you prefer to use one, but they are not necessary to follow along. You are welcome to sit wherever you are comfortable. Our worship services typically last about one hour.
During worship, the congregation will sing, pray, hear readings from Scripture, confess the Christian faith, and hear a sermon centered on God’s Word. At various times the congregation may stand, sit, or respond together. Simply follow along as you are comfortable.
If Lutheran worship is unfamiliar to you, don’t worry about getting everything right. You are welcome to listen, observe, and participate as you become comfortable.
What About Children?
Children are welcome in worship, and during the service they are invited to come forward for a children’s message. These short messages are designed to involve children in the worship service and present a biblical truth in an age-appropriate way.
Sunday School for children, youth, and adults begins at 9:30 AM. Our Christian education helps children and families hear God’s promises in Scripture and see how those promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Our youth also enjoy retelling Bible stories through marionette puppet presentations once a month, which have become a favorite part of our ministry for both children and adults.
Holy Communion
We believe that in the Lord’s Supper, Christ gives us His true body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine for the forgiveness of sins and the strengthening of faith.
Because Holy Communion is both a gift and a shared confession of faith, we encourage those who come to the Lord’s Table to examine themselves and receive the Sacrament trusting Christ’s promise of forgiveness.
If you are not a member of an LCMS congregation, or if you have questions about receiving Holy Communion at Good Shepherd, please speak with the pastor before the service. He will be glad to talk with you.
Practical Questions
What should I wear?
Come dressed as you are comfortable. You’ll see everything from casual clothing to more traditional Sunday attire.
Will I be singled out as a visitor?
No. We want to welcome you without putting you on the spot.
Will I be expected to give an offering?
No. Visitors should not feel obligated to contribute.
Do I have to be Lutheran to attend?
Not at all. You are welcome to worship with us and learn more about what Lutherans believe and teach.
What if I don’t know anyone?
That’s perfectly fine. Someone will be happy to help you find the sanctuary, Sunday School classes, or anything else you need.
New to the Emerald Coast?
Good Shepherd has a long relationship with the military community of the Emerald Coast. We especially welcome individuals and families arriving at Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field, and the surrounding Fort Walton Beach area. Many of our members are veterans themselves.
Moving to a new community brings plenty of unfamiliar things with it. We hope Good Shepherd can be a place where you hear God’s Word, grow in faith, and find Christian community.
Have a Question Before You Visit?
If there is something you would like to know before Sunday, please contact the church office. We’ll be glad to help.
